Excel Christian Counselling Social Counselling Worker information

The Social Counselling Worker qualification is a QCTO accredited NQF5 (Higher certificate). The course aims to equip and qualify competent and skilled lay Christian counsellors for the purpose of providing supportive counselling services to diverse groups, such as individual, family, and groups. 

The Excel Christian Counselling, Social Counselling Worker is uniquely designed to equip our students to provide supportive counselling as a Christian Counsellor as well as counselling in non-religious communities. 

The material is based on basic counselling concepts and skills applicable in the counselling setting that focuses on providing the foundational skills and knowledge to prepare the student for the workforce. 

Duration: This is a 2-year qualification that depends on the specific circumstances of the student. With this qualification, the learner can become a lay counsellor and register on the appropriate level with the Association of Christian Religious Practitioners (ACRP) in South Africa.

The program contains:
  1. 30 credits of Knowledge modules (300 hours theoretical),
  2. 48 credits practical (480 hours practical) and
  3. 65 credits workplace (650 hours workplace experience).

 

The theoretical modules are presented in a weekly class in person or by Zoom. A Facilitator is assigned to you who will guide you through the theoretical, practical and workplace. 

There are three theoretical modules, four practical and four workplace modules that must be completed before final exams.

 

Outcome of the NQF 5

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Christian Lay Counsellor- social counselling worker.

 

Affordability

Excel Academy believes that training must be accessible and affordable to every person that believes he or she is called to ministry. Therefore, our programs are very affordable with different payment options.

The cost of the qualification is R 24 680, which must be paid over two years and includes material and all class-related activities, excluding the EISA (External Integrated Summative Exam). 

During the course, internal assessments are done through assignments submitted and one integrated final examination. The cost can be budgeted between R500- R1000 per student amounts depending on the AQP (external examiner).

 

Study Material

There are 3 components to the course

  1. Knowledge component with Knowledge modules, class discussions and assignments
  2. Practical Component with Practical sessions in class, case studies etc.
  3. Workplace component with Counseling programmes- practical work with counselees.

 

Study Guide/ Module manual

For each Module, the student is given a study manual. This manual instructs the student on completing each assignment, as well as the exam demarcation for the specific subject.

The File with included modules included in the course fee, and they are regarded as the only reading material required (aside from the Bible and the Study Guide) to complete the assignments and study for the invigilated exam. You can download or acquire additional textbooks mentioned by the facilitator. This is optional.

 
Knowledge component

The purpose of the knowledge modules is to provide a basic foundation of counselling background and knowledge. In the modules, we focus on teaching the required skills and techniques a lay Christian counsellor needs to competently and ethically provide supportive counselling services to diverse groups. Key areas of focus are the fundamental of screening, understanding the client’s well-being, basic counselling skills, ethics in counselling and working with diverse backgrounds in individual and group counselling settings. 

The theoretical modules are as follows:

Module 1: Fundamentals Of Screening and / or Assessment Within the Scope of Counselling

Module 2: Counselling Skills

Module 3: Professionalism and Ethical Compliance Applicable to Counselling

 
Practical modules

In the Practical Modules, the student is given the opportunity to perform out their learned skills and knowledge in the class setting. The purpose of the Practical modules is to create a safe and practical environment to perform out the learned skills. The practical modules take place within classes under guidance of the facilitator, and act as a simulation for the student to take part in role play to demonstrate their counselling skills before entering into the Workplace Modules. Through role play, the student can learn under the guidance of the mentor or facilitator to apply their skills effectively. 

The Practical modules are as follows:

Module 1: Compile the client profile

Module 2: Facilitate Appropriate Interventions

Module 3: Apply basic counselling Skills in a Problem-Saturated Situation

Module 4: Facilitate Quality of Multi-Level Optimal Functioning

 
Work Modules

The Workplace Modules are where the student is able to enter into the field to apply their practical and learned skills in a real-life counselling setting. Students will be required to seek out clients and enter into counselling relationships with clients under the supervision and guidance of a mentor. The purpose of the Workplace Modules is to provide an opportunity for the students to gain practical experience while building their competence and applying their skills in the context of a counselling setting.

The Work Modules are as follows:

Module 2: Facilitation of resolutions

Module 3: Basic Counselling skills and Facilitation of Multi-level functioning

Module 4: Facilitation of multi-level functioning
